Homeschooling; is it worth or not?

By Setia Ningsih

Many parents choose homeschooling rather than public school for their children’s education. Parents may have their own reasons in choosing homeschooling as their children education. They may think that they can have a personalized schedule of homeschooling. Both parents and children can arrange their own learning time. Parents can also have their own curriculum based on children needs. The question is: can homeschooling give bad effect on children social life?Is it really worth for children’s future?

Ray (2015) said that the home-educated are doing well, typically above average, on measures of social, emotional, and psychological development. Research measures include peer interaction, self-concept, leadership skills, family cohesion, participation in community service, and self-esteem. This means that homeschooling does not always have the term “strict” in it, especially for children life. Children can enjoy their social life as well as other children who have education in public school do.

That’s about homeschooling effect on children’s social life, what about their achievement in the future? Ray (2015) stated that the other research based on adults who were home educated is growing; thus far it indicates that they:
1.Participate in local community service more frequently than does the general population,
2.Vote and attend public meetings more frequently than the general population, and
3.Go to and succeed at college at an equal or higher rate than the general population.
4.By adulthood, internalize the values and beliefs of their parents at a high rate.
From the explanation above, we can be more aware that homeschooling also has its potencies in education for children future’s life. However, it’s based on how parents or private teacher themselves teach children; whatever methods or techniques they use in teaching will have effects to children competencies and understanding both in academic and social field.

In the end, we can not blame that homeschooling is worse or not that worth than public school because everything is based on children needs and parents’ competencies in educating their children. Also, parents who choose homeschooling for their children don’t have to worry if their children can’t keep up with other students in public school because they have the same chances to succeed as well as public school students do.

  1. Great writing! I think homeschooling ain't that bad. As far as I know, in homeschooling does not mean that the children just learn at home. Usually in some homeschooling organizations or companies they also provide some activities that can help children to build their social interaction among homeschooling-children.

  2. I agree with your opinion. The benefits of homeschooling are possibilities endless. Parents choose to homeschool their children for various reasons. Homeschooling can be the smartest way to teach children because homeschoolers have the same access to online learning, friendship, and extracurricular activities as public school students in general.

Education system in Indonesia and Finland

By: Eviyana Rismawati Finland is one of the countries recognized by the world to have the best education system.  Their system is different from the basic principles of education in Indonesia. This country has never given homework to its students. Indonesia was also rumored to want to adopt this system.  But it might require a process because the difference is still quite far. The educational portrait between Indonesia and Finland is very different. This is due to many factors that influence it, one of which is Indonesia is a developing country that is looking for forms of the education system while Finland is a developed country that is no longer focused on the search for forms of the education system but on its development.  If likened, Indonesia is still building the foundation of the education system so that it lags far behind Finland.
